“Clean beauty” sounds simple, doesn’t it? But pick up two products with that phrase on the label, and you may find they mean different things by it.
There is no single U.S. definition of clean beauty that every skincare and hair care brand must follow. That doesn’t mean the words are meaningless. It means we need to ask a better question: What does this brand mean by “clean”?
For some brands, the focus is on ingredients they choose to leave out. Others emphasize how a product is made, its packaging, or where its ingredients come from. Those are different choices, and a pretty green label doesn’t tell us the whole story.
A simple place to start: turn the bottle around
Think about the shampoo you used this morning or the moisturizer sitting by your sink. Have you ever looked at its ingredient list?
You don’t need to recognize every name to become a more thoughtful shopper. Start with what matters to you:
- Fragrance: Do you enjoy scented products, or would you rather choose an unscented option? If fragrance is a concern for you, check the label and ask the brand for more detail.
- Purpose: What is the product meant to do, and which ingredients help it do that?
- Your experience: How does your skin or scalp feel when you use it? An ingredient that works beautifully for a friend may not be your favorite.
- The bigger picture: If a brand talks about sustainability, does it explain its packaging or practices in specific terms?
“Natural” isn’t an automatic promise that a product is gentle or right for everyone. And an unfamiliar, scientific-sounding ingredient name isn’t a reason to worry on its own. What matters is the ingredient, how it’s used in the formula, and whether the finished product suits you.
The same curiosity applies to environmental claims. “Eco-friendly” sounds lovely, but what exactly is better for the environment? Is the packaging refillable? Is a particular material recyclable where you live? Clear details are more useful than a broad claim.
One small step this week
Choose one product you use regularly—perhaps your shampoo, body wash, or face cream. Read the label. Notice what questions come to mind. Then visit the brand’s website if you’d like to learn more.
You don’t have to replace everything in your bathroom or become an ingredient expert overnight. Clean beauty, to me, starts with paying attention, asking questions, and making choices that feel right for you.
